In this article, we'll go through how to create a screening question with follow-up questions, so you can ask candidates more specific questions based on how they answer, instead of showing every question to every applicant.
ℹ️ Note that creating and managing questions in your Reusable Questions library is only available to admins, or managers with extended access.
Create the question in your library
Every screening question with follow-ups starts in your library. Click your profile icon, select My Company, and go to Reusable Questions.
2. Click Create New Question to open the question builder.
3. Choose Select one or Yes/No as the question type, then fill in your answer options — for example "Yes" and "No" — and click Add Question to save it to your library.
ℹ️ Follow-up questions are only supported on Select one and Select multiple questions. If you pick a different question type – like Yes/No or Free text – you won't get the option to add a follow-up.

Add a follow-up question to an answer
1. Click + follow up on the answer that should trigger an extra question. For example, adding a follow-up to "Yes" means only candidates who answer "Yes" will see it.
2. Choose a question type for the follow-up and fill in its details, just like you would for any other question. Click Save when you're done.
ℹ️ How deep can follow-ups go?
You can add up to 5 levels of follow-up questions. That means a follow-up question can have its own follow-up, and so on – useful for narrowing down very specific situations without cluttering the form for everyone else.
3. Repeat this for as many answers and levels as you need, then click Save and close. Your question, with all of its follow-ups, is saved to the library and ready to use on any job.
Add the question to a job's application form
Open the job you want to use the question for and go to its Application Form tab. See this article for more on customizing application forms in general.
Click Add Questions from Library, select your question, and click Add questions to apply it to this job's form.
What candidates see
Candidates only see the top-level question at first. As soon as they pick an answer that has a follow-up attached, that follow-up appears right below it – and this continues through every level you've set up. Any follow-up tied to an answer they didn't choose stays hidden.

Known limitations/Upcoming improvements
Only the parent question can be marked as mandatory – follow-up questions can't be set as required on your own. If you need a follow-up to be mandatory, reach out to your point of contact at Jobylon, as this can be set up on the backend.
If you want the same follow-up question to appear under more than one answer, you'll need to add it separately to each answer – it can't be applied to multiple answers in bulk.
Right now, you can add a question with follow-ups to a job's form, but you won't see or be able to edit the follow-up questions from the application form editor itself – you'll need to go back to the Reusable Questions library in My Company settings to make changes there.
